Struggling with Self-Doubt? Try This 5-Minute Journal

I’ve been my own worst critic lately—knowing I need to make changes but feeling stuck and unmotivated. Then, I discovered a simple solution: a 5-minute journal (learned from the Tim Ferriss podcast—highly recommend!). Surprisingly, this tiny habit made an instant difference in my mood. If you want an easy way to feel better fast, here’s how to make the most of it (plus a free printable at the end!).

How to Use the Journal Prompts

1. Gratitude Prompt

  • Focus on small, everyday joys: Instead of broad wins (like a work bonus), appreciate little things—a great book, your morning coffee, etc. Big things are fine too, but the goal is to notice the overlooked.
  • No repeats: This trains you to spot new positives daily, fighting discouragement by highlighting what’s going well.

2. “What Would Make Today Great?” Prompt

  • Keep goals realistic: Underestimate your daily capacity. Long to-do lists set you up for frustration; 2-3 small wins are better.
  • Stick to 3 lines max: The printable limits space intentionally. If writing manually, don’t add extra lines!
  • Progress > perfection: Missed a goal? No guilt. Reviewing past entries later shows how much you’ve actually accomplished.

3. Words of Encouragement Prompt

Use this space to cheer yourself on—especially for tasks that feel daunting (like finally finishing that book).

4. End-of-Day Reflection: “3 Amazing Things Today”

This is gold for monthly look-backs. Tracking small and big wins helps you see growth and stay motivated.
