Being a Redhead is more than a Hair Color, it’s a Lifestyle (Cruelty-Free, Too!)

Marcia Cross natural redhead

Marcia Cross is a natural redhead!

By: Adrienne & Stephanie Vendetti from howtobearedhead.com

Most natural redheads are born with sensitive, pale skin and frizzy, curly hair. Most advice for these redheaded problems is, “Oh, just rock that red hair!” But, most redheads are thinking, “Wait, can I enhance anything about my appearance and ALSO rock the red hair? Is it possible to have the best of both worlds?”

My sister, Stephanie and I are natural born redheads and from our experience, most professionals would say no because they do not know what to do to compliment redheaded features.

Then, it gets even more complicated- what if redheads are also looking for products that are “cruelty-free,” meaning they are not tested on animals? This is the point when many beauty professionals would throw in their towels (or in this case, their makeup brushes). Most redheads are convinced products are not made for them, especially any that are natural and cruelty-free.

We are here to tell you redheads, you are wrong!

From head to toe, these are the products/natural remedies we use and you should use them too.

Hair:

Products:

  • Aquage Hydrating Shampoo – It is a fact that natural redheads have the thickest hair, but have the smallest number of strands. Therefore, we love this shampoo because it cleans our hair without leaving residue and it’s sulfate-free!
  • Burt’s Bees Pomegranate & Soy Conditioner – This conditioner rocks! It is organic and gives my hair that extra shine. Make sure to only use it at the ends of your hair because it may make your hair greasy if it’s applied at the scalp.

Natural Remedies:

  • Kale – Our red hair is thicker with the use of kale—and we aren’t kidding! We have been using it in our smoothie for the past year and our hair and nails are better than ever.
  • Olive Oil – We use this as a leave-in conditioner. We usually apply this before our favorite movie and wash it out after two or three hours; Our red locks are so shiny!

Skin:

Products:

  • Napa Soap Lavender Grapeseed Oil Lotion – Redheads have very sensitive skin and we’ve learned it’s best if we stick to natural products. This is why we love Napa Soap Lavender Grapeseed Oil Lotion. It is made with real grapeseeds (very hard to find!) and is free of harmful chemicals. For the best results, we apply it thirty seconds after getting out of the shower because your pores are able to absorb more lotion!
  • The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Face Mist – One day, we met a beautiful redhead with the most gorgeous skin! We thought she was in her twenties, but she was forty! We asked her what her secret was to staying young and she said: Vitamin E. She simply washes her face every night before bed and applies the spray to her face. We also use it before we put on our makeup to give our skin that extra boost.

Natural Remedies:

  • Olive Oil Baths – Can you tell we love olive oil? It does wonders to our redheaded features! On cold winter nights, we’ll make sure to take olive oil baths because the it adds a protective layer to our skin to help us fight the harmful winds when walking in the city.
  • Sugar – We use sugar to exfoliate our skin AND lips! If you look at the ingredients in most expensive lip balms, you’ll find sugar is the main ingredient. Why? Because it gently gets rid of the dead skin, providing room for new skin to grow. So, stop buying that expensive lip balm and resort to natural granulated sugar!
  • Tea – Apart from drinking ten or so cups a day, we love to use tea as a toner. We simply boil chamomile tea (save some for before bedtime, it helps you sleep!), let cool, add some lemon juice and with a cotton ball we clean the dirt from our pores.
  • Tomatoes – Redheads burn in the sun and tomatoes are proven to naturally keep your skin protected from dangerous rays. We love to use this as an excuse to eat that extra piece of pizza!

Makeup:

Products:

  • Urban Decay Eye Shadow – We’ve been using the same eye shadow kit for years and we love it! Everyday, we choose different colors and it never gets old. Our redheaded tip: This season, wear a beautiful hunter green eye shadow under a black eyeliner. Your red hair will look smokin’!
  • Tarte Bronzer – This is also another product that is chemical free, but we love it because it gives our skin that extra bronzed look that we desperately need. As redheads, we are naturally very pale, but we don’t think there is anything wrong with adding a darker tone to redheaded skin! Don’t be afraid, redheads!
  • NARS Lipsticks – Recently, we’ve been wearing red lipstick and we feel more beautiful than ever. But, with the 70’s being “in” this season, we’ve been switching back to a pale pink. Sad update – June 2017 – NARS is no longer cruelty free – the company has decided to sell in China, a country that requires animal testing. Click here for details.

At How to be a Redhead, we are focused on bringing together female redheads of the world with beauty advice and recommendations. With these secrets, your redheaded features are bound to stand out.

Now, one last thing… you now have permission to rock that red hair!

I agree natural and organic products are best for redheads, everyone can benefit from choosing chemical-free products, better for the environment too!

    Hi,
This is a lovely post. I really enjoyed reading it and I think that being redhed is a fashion statement now and it looks nice as well.

Sephora is not cruelty-free; they sell their product in their retail stores in China.
