The DIY Dirt on Dandruff: How to Cure it Naturally

in Budget, Hair, Misc, Vegan on 05/25/12

Guest Post by Nadia Jones

For those of us that love to play with our hair, dandruff is one of the worst things to deal with. After all our hard work prepping our to-die-for coifs, the effects are marred by unwanted white flakes that just won’t seem to go away. And forget about wearing styles made to swing and bounce because who wants flakes falling from a sexy bouncing mane?

It’s easy enough to buy a drugstore shampoo to combat this unwanted scalp foe in a snap, but those brands also come with unwanted toxins and carcinogens commonly found in women’s beauty products these days.

Fortunately, there are ways to fight dandruff naturally, and many of these tried and true methods will leave your scalp and hair healthier than ever.

Here’s How:
To really be rid of dandruff, you have to take a two-pronged approach and work on it both on the inside of your body as well as the outside. This means treating your scalp with natural dandruff remedies and making changes in your diet to improve your scalp and hair health.

First, tackle your diet. It’s important to increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet as an initial step toward a healthy scalp. Also, try not to cook your fruits and vegetables as much as you can. Produce in raw form will provide the most nutrients and hydration. The next thing you should try is trimming your caffeine intake. Caffeine is a notorious dehydrator, so do your best to drink less coffee and tea. It will do wonders for a dry scalp.

Now, on to the fun part!

There are plenty of recipes out there for natural, homemade dandruff treatments, so do some research and try a few that seem interesting. This natural dandruff treatment from Julyne Derrick of About.com looks like a great option.

All you’ll need is flaxseed or olive oil, sugar, apple cider vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide. Simply mix the oil and sugar together in a bowl. Massage the mixture into your scalp and wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap to sit for about twenty minutes. Next, combine the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide with 2 cups of water and put it in a spray bottle. After your hair is finished soaking in the oils, jump in the shower and use a tiny bit of shampoo to rinse it out. While you’re still in the shower, spray your hair with the vinegar mixture. Then wrap your hair and let it soak again. Rinse out, and then you’re done!

I think the recipe would work just fine WITHOUT the hydrogen peroxide. Apple cider vinegar works wonders.

Ugh, this is totally a post I’ve needed to see. This is all new information to me. And here I sit with my coffee in my hand and realizing it’s been a while since I’ve had a real piece of fruit or a raw vegetable. I’ll give all these nutrition tips a try before I try the solution.

Just another thing to love about apple cider vinegar! I like to use a clarifying apple cider vinegar rinse to get rid of dead skin, product build up and cleanse my scalp. To make the rinse is easy, just mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water together (1/4-1/2 cup). After cleansing hair, pour the acv/water mixture through the hair and onto the scalp. Let set for 10-15 minutes. Then rinse. Make my hair shiny too 🙂 Haven’t tried acv with olive oil but may give it a go next time!
