Make your own facial toner or moisturizing body spray by my beauty bunny

DIY Toner and Moisturizing spray

Recently I did a post on summer skincare with NOW FOODS and I was able to share with you guys a bunch of great products that keep me looking fabulous from head to toe.  One big thing that I hope you all got from the post is that moisturization is key to having great skin and hair. It’s always great to drink lots of water to stay hydrated from the inside out, but topically applying lotions or oils can give you that added benefit and feeling great as well as looking great.

Today I am going to show you two great DIY skincare products you can make at home to tone and moisturize the skin.  So grab some vegetable glycerine, rosewater concentrate, distilled water, and small spray bottles (I’m using a 3 oz bottle I got in the Target travel section) to house your concoctions. In case you aren’t familiar with how glycerin helps the skin, this clear, odorless liquid comes from plant oils and helps hydrate the skin by acting as a humectant. Humectants draw moisture into the upper layers of the skin by absorbing water from its surrounding environment. We use distilled water for this DIY project because its has the most impurities (metals, minerals, bacteria) removed from it, making it the cleanest for mixing with other ingredients. You can find distilled water at any local market next to the bottled spring water you would drink.

Rosewater Facial Toner

First, we’re going to make a rosewater facial toner. Rosewater is known to soothe irritated, stressed skin, and is filled with antioxidants that fight free radical damage. It’s also a great mid-day face refresher–especially when left in the fridge for a cooling effect. It’s toning abilities come from the fact that it works as a mild astringent so it’s suitable for even sensitive skin.

This mixture is very easy and will only include the distilled water and rosewater concentrate. I tend to mix larger batches of items in a sterilized bowl, but this is small and easy to shake and mix in the spray bottle. Because this is DIY and generally made to each owns taste, I will make the measurements very easy for you. I filled the spray bottle with distilled water till it just about hit the upper curve of the bottle, leaving enough space to either add more water, or more rosewater. I then added about 15 drops of rosewater concentrate and shook the spray bottle up to mix it together. Go ahead and spritz away. I found that 15 drops was just enough for me and will be leaving this bottle in the fridge for a mid-day refresher. I went ahead and spritz away after my morning workout which felt awesome.

Moisturizing Spray

Next, a moisturizing body (or face) spray can be made in almost the same simple steps. Use a clean 3 oz spray bottle and fill up to the curve of the bottle with distilled water. Next I added about 5ml (or about 1 teaspoon) of vegetable glycerine to the water. You will see the glycerine sink to the bottle of the bottle, but it will mix entirely with a good shaking. Next, add your 15 drops of rosewater concentrate and replace the sprayer so you can shake it up. This mixture will look more “bubbly” after shaking. I felt this was more of a body product for me than face so I spritz all over my arms and chest. I love that this is a non-heavy moisturizing option to do mid-day. I love to use creams after the shower, but on a hot day- this is great!

Each of these DIY’ers can be customized to your liking! Want a little more rosewater, add a couple drops at a time, shaking it up and test it. Want to try with your favorite essential oil like tea tree oil or lavender, why not? Just be sure to research what would work best for your skin and what you’re going after. NOW FOODS has a huge selection of essential oils to choose from and explain what each one of them can do. These also make great little gifts for friends and family when going on a summer road trip or a pool day with the ladies.

Do we have any DIY’ers here? Whats your favorite home made skincare product to make? Share in the comment section below!

Don’t forget about adding alcohol (80 proof or higher) or another natural preservative! Products containing water–especially those containing additional humectants–need some sort of preservation unless they will always be kept in the refrigerator–and even then, they should be used within a couple of weeks. Better to be safe than sorry!

Rosewater is a great product and smells really nice, so it is a great idea to use that in this recipe. I have never tried vegetable glycerine in DIY face products before, so I’m excited to see how that turns out. Thank you for the detailed, step-by-step instructions on making these recipes.
