How to Cover a Tattoo

in Body, Misc on 01/10/10

Tattoos are not always your friend.

Tattoos are great, but there are always those times when you just need to cover them up.

Maybe for work, maybe around grandma, maybe you’ve got a job interview or a wedding, maybe you’re going to be on camera – or maybe you don’t want to look like that guy from Jersey Shore.

Whatever it is, we have found a great way to hide those tats.

Step One – Using light brush strokes, apply a THIN layer of tattoo concealer over the entire tattoo. Use a hair dryer to dry it completely.

Step Two – Apply a second thin layer of tattoo concealer over the area. Start from the middle and work your way out to the edges of the tattoo.

Step Three – Apply a third layer if necessary and then dust the entire area with powder making sure to dust past the edges of the tattoo.

A friend of mine tried Ferb’s Tattoo Undercover and Alibi Setting Powder to cover one of her tats. Here’s her verdict.

Guest review by Jean Seymour:

I currently have five tattoos and have to keep them covered for work. Normally this is not a problem, but I have a few blouses I can’t wear because the tats on my shoulders show a little. I used Ferbs Temporary Tattoo Cover Up to cover the one that shows the most and it worked pretty well.

After one coat:

After two coats:

Final (blended and set with powder):

As you can see from the photos, the tattoo was mostly covered up; I only applied two layers of the makeup instead of the three it suggested just due to time constraints but with the setting powder you really couldn’t see the tattoo. The only caveat I have for this product is the time it takes; you have to let the layers dry before adding another so doing this before work might not work so well on a normal day.

Also, I didn’t have all of the available colors so I couldn’t get it to match my skin tone completely but I think that if I had the time and the correct makeup colors I could get much better coverage. You can buy samples of Ferb’s tattoo coverup for about a dollar each. I would recommend doing that before purchasing to get your exact color match.

I would use this again, especially for special occasions where tattoos are not acceptable.

Women, don't get a tattoo. That butterfly looks great on your breast when you're twenty or thirty, but when you get to seventy, it stretches into a condor. ~Billy Elmer

Thanks for your information, maybe if I had read it before I had my leg tattoos removed, I would have kept them. I had a beautiful butterfly, and a garter, but then as I reached 30, I got a good job in a legal firm and had to go to court etc in a pencil skirt, so I went for IPL tattoo removal. I called my self tattoo removal as a sort of protest.

Your information is so valuable as it will stop other girls having their tattoos removed. I could have covered mine up only on the days I had to go to court.

I used to love my tattoos, but when you fall out of love with them there is no escape. tattoo removal is not for the faint of heart and paying twice, once to have it and once to remove it hurts too.

Thanks for this great information and I would refer this solution to my friend about your "tattoo covering solution" who is still thinking of getting his tattoo removed for his wedding.

I wish more people would write sites like this that are actually interesting to read. With all the crap floating around on the internet, it is refreshing to read a site like yours instead.

That is great for when you want to cover with make up but what about when you want to cover it up with another tattoo. Some artists will tell you to lighten it up with laser removal first. This is the first sign you are dealing with an amature. Any good tattoo artist can cover any tattoo no matter how dark it is with the right level of talent and the right eye for it. Make sure you look at portfolio pictures of before and afters of cover ups from that artist as well. It never hurts to look for some killer reviews.

Thanks for pointing out the need for a hair dryer. Tattoo cover-up is something you’d probably want to get over with pretty quickly. I can imagine it to be a emotionally wrenching experience for some, despite their strong desire to abolish the tattoo. The faster the process, the faster they can put it out of their mind and move on to a life without the old tattoo. I think tattoo cover-up is a great idea, especially when it’s done quickly, and a hair dryer would facilitate speed by reducing the time the concealer takes to dry.
