How To Get The Most Out Of Your Natural Lashes

in Budget, Makeup, Misc, Vegan on 12/27/14

I can’t think of one person who doesn’t want full, gorgeous, fluttery lashes. Can you? Even when you have a “no makeup” day, many of us still opt for at least a coat of mascara and lip balm. Can’t help it. #gottahavethoselashes. Let’s go over some tips to get the most out of those lashes before making a trip to the salon for extensions or lash dye jobs.

How to Grow and Condition Lashes

Your eyelashes can dry out over time with all the things we do to them; daily mascara, not washing it off, or using curlers that crimp and bend instead of curl and enhance. To maximize the beauty of your natural lashes, make sure to wash all remaining eye makeup off at the end of the day. If you sleep with your face smashed into a pillow (like me) you can risk bending and breaking lashes when they are coated with a stiff, drying mascara. Gently remove all eye makeup before planting your head on that pillow.

For lashes to grow you need to moisturize and nourish them. Biotin is a B-complex vitamin that is thought to help with hair and nail growth. You can find it naturally in foods we eat like eggs, nuts, fish, and whole-grain cereals– but can also come in supplement form. It essentially kicks off cell proliferation and the chain reaction in producing amino acids to build healthy, thick hair. More amino acids means more protein which is what keratin is made of. Keratin is what our hair is made of, by the way!

Moisturizing your lashes can also improve their appearance. There are several different suggestions on what you can use, but all of them agree, only apply to the lashes and do not get into the eyes! Coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil and even non-petroleum, Vaseline-like products (like Alba Botanica’s Un-Petroleum) can be used to coat the lashes at night and will help prevent breakage and increase growth. You can use your fingertips or a lash brush to coat and comb it through – just remember to give it time. Some people report it can take 2-3 months before they see changes.

If you really want to treat your lashes you can go with a lash conditioner . Typically , in just 4-8 weeks of AM and PM applications, you can nourish those lashes into thicker, stronger and longer lashes without the help of animal-tested prescriptions like Latisse. Think of it as liquid vitamins for your lashes!

Using a good mascara primer will also help in creating fuller, longer lashes. Tarte Cosmetics has a good mascara primer (MultiplEYE Lash Enhancer) that preps the lashes and helps prevent them from drying out from mascara application. Just a few swipes before applying your blackest black and you’ll see a slight difference in the fullness of your lashes.

A good quality mascara is the final step in creating lust worthy lashes. Some formulas can create weak, brittle lashes that end up falling out.  The key is to constantly nourish them so they are healthy and look their best. Pacifica’s Stellar Gaze Mineral mascara has coconut oil, and Vitamin B to strengthen the lashes while coating them with eye-enhancing color.
