Fun & Trendy Lip Colors

in Makeup on 04/27/10

Since I just turned 30, I thought maybe I was a little too old to try out some fun, bright Spring lip colors.  Turns out I’m either just really immature, or these colors are not just for kids (we’ll go with the latter)!  I tried a bright orange, but matte, color by cruelty-free beauty brand, Lime Crime, called My Beautiful Rocket. This color is surprisingly wearable! I really love Lime Crime’s founder, Doe Deere, and her positive outlook on life. Life should be fun people! A New Yorker, Doe started the line in 2008 when she couldn’t find shades bright enough to suit her fancy. The Lime Crime slogan is, “So bright, it’s illegal!” Some products are vegan, and NONE are tested on animals.

My Beautiful Rocket - Lime Crime

What do you think? Can I pull this off? Keep in mind, my bathroom lighting is terrible – this will look more orange-y in the real world. (I actually didn’t know I had bags under my eyes until I saw this pic – but that’s for a whole different post!) This particular color also makes your teeth look yellow (I ain’t postin’ a pic of that!), but if you’re wearing it at night, no one will notice. Lime Crime has blue-based colors (like fuschia tones for example) that will make your teeth look whiter, if that’s what your after.

Would you wear it? There are a ton of other fun colors I’d like to try too. You can buy Lime Crime lipsticks ($16)  at Space.NK stores in NY or online or Bloomingdales across the US. You can also get it at Urban Outfitters in Canada. You’ll start seeing it across the pond in 2010 as well.

I also love Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. You can also read my interview with David Klasfeld, the creator. OCC has come out with an AMAZING product called Lip Tar. This is definitely a going-out-on-the-town kind of product for me. It’s goes on like a gloss, but dries to a satiny finish. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s not sticky AT ALL. It’s 100% vegan and cruelty-free and has no parabens. But, the most amazing thing is the CRAZY amount of pigment. Nylon magazine calls it “the next big thing” and I agree.

When I first put it on, I didn’t realize you really only need the smallest of dabs. I think the little tube will last me the rest of my life. It comes in tons of different shades. I really like the matte, nude color. But, when I want to bring out my crazy side, I can try their fuschia, red, purple…or even bright orange, yellow, green and blue! These shades are mixable, so if you’re not ready to get crazy, with say, black lipstick – you can add a little black to the red and get a more burgundy shade. Fun to play artist with!
