Fall 2014 Beauty Trends

With Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week for spring/summer 2015 past, and the first day of fall steadily fast approaching on September 22nd, now is a better time than ever to review the top fall beauty trends for 2014.

Furs, oversized coats, even some ’60s and sports attire ran the runways during the 2014 fall/winter shows, but here’s what to expect when dressing your face this season:

SKIN:

Skin stays illuminated for fall/winter, never falling flat or dull. Bronzer is even welcomed this season using it to help sculpt the face. Highlighter used on cheekbones warms up the skin to not look as frigid as it may be outside.

Natural shades of blush are used mostly now, or a varied shade of merlot for those deep winter months.

Cruelty Free Recommendations:

  • CoverFX primers, foundations and concealers
  • Too Faced bronzers
  • Tarte Cheek Stain in Sheer Berry

EYES:

Color is no longer just for the spring/summer months. It seems any shade of blue on the eyes; either applied as a shadow, thick winged liner, or smudged along the bottom lash line would make you perfectly on trend.

Metallic silver, bronze, and gold liquid shadows and liners are a must for winter. Match your eyelids to the way snow sparkles and you’ll be sure to shine at any holiday party.

Liner goes wide this season. Seen on the runways, forget your perfect winged cat eye. Go over and out with your eye liner- over your crease and out past your eyebrow. Use the same color liquid liner to fill in the eyes. Think of a teardrop shape, but sideways. This eye trend looks like poised drama.

Cruelty Free Recommendations:

  • Urban Decay eyeshadow in Radium or Evidence
  • Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC) Loose Colour Concentrates in Cavu Blue or Static
  • Too Faced Glitter Glaze – gold
  • Urban Decay eyeliner in Goldmine, Scorch or liquid El Dorado

LIPS:

The look for lips this season is very much dependent on what’s happening with the eyes. With so much drama happening with eyes, it’s best to keep lips subtle. If it is a simple black wing lining the eyes then go for lipstick shades of burgundy, velvet purple, or even classic red.

Natural lips were everywhere during Fashion Week, all changing in tone to match the model’s natural skin tone. If browns start to bore you layer a shimmery pink gloss on top or go for matte pale pink lips.

Cruelty Free Recommendations:

  • 100% Pure Lip Glaze in Cabernet, Sultry or Strawberry – or a Gloss in Peach or Pink Caramel or Popsicle
  • Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Nude, Melted Ruby or Melted Marshmallow

NAILS:

Nude nails are your new BFF. The understated look never seemed so chic. After all these past seasons of nail art, nude nails are the unexpected punch to any outfit. There are so many options in the nude family to fit anyone’s style. Sheer baby pink, light tan, dark tan, even brown polishes are all the right shades.

Classic red nail polish, the perfect power color is good year round, but especially closer to the holiday with the man in a red and white suit. Just be careful not to reach for the red with orange undertones, that’s more of a summer-fire red. Reds that border on brown undertones are much more fall-friendly.

Nail art is more refined for this fall/winter. Try a simple stripe down a nail, off center is all the better. Simple half moon manicures are amped up by pairing metallic shades with shimmer free polish. Metallic nail polish is artsy enough for fall/winter.

Cruelty Free Recommendations:

  • Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Unknown Pleasures in Covet
  • Chrome Girl Nails in How Merlot Can You Go, Love Note or No Tan LInes
  • Zoya in Nyssa or India

HAIR:

Ponytails: Always sleek and shiny can be worn in a bit of various ways. Either hair all pulled back and gripped tightly at the top of the head. Or a ponytail with a deep side part and gripped low right above the neck.

Buns: Think of a ballerina, do a perfect bun like of a ballerina about to stand under the spotlight or a more relaxed bun like of a ballerina who just spent a few hours training the bar method.

High buns at the top of the head are perfect for that professional look. Take the bun low and either part hair straight down the middle or with a deep side part for an edgy look.

Wet Look: The wet look is perfect with your evening ensemble. It takes an ordinary look into high fashion in a sweeping minute. To achieve this look use hair products with a heavy consistency to pull hair back and don’t forget to cover the ends so they don’t frizz. Use hair oils and waxes with a super hold hairspray.

Cornrows: Surprisingly, cornrows made their way down the runways during fall/winter 2014 shows. To keep this look from looking urban street style, pair cornrows with an additional style. Either grip them into pigtails or cornrow half your head and sleek the rest into a modern ponytail.

Hair Texture: Super straight, loose, or tight waves. Blowouts are welcome with open arms these next 2 seasons and if you want some texture wave your hair up using either hot tools, light mousse or leave hair natural.

Cruelty Free Recommendations:

  • DermOrganic Argan Oil, Sculpting Spray Gel, Windswept Defining Whip, and Volume Foam
  • BiOrganics – Replenishing Treatment, Replenishing Shampoo and Secret Elixir Hair Perfecting Oil
  • Green + Glam – Styling Cream, Volumizing Spray, Styling Gel and Shine and Hold Spray
