  • Almay – Almay is owned by Revlon and does 3rd party testing
  • Aveeno – The “natural” vibe of this brand may make you think it’s cruelty free. Sadly, it’s not.
  • Banana Boat – We all need sunscreen, but skip this brand.
  • Crest – Don’t buy toothpaste from this animal tester.
  • Essie – unfortunately Essie nail polish is tested on animals.
  • Hawaiian Tropic – Ugggh – it smells so good, but it’s not cruelty free.
  • L’Oreal – There are other cosmetic brands out there that offer a similar true match philosophy, so we don’t need you. L’Oreal does test on animals.
  • Maybelline – Does Maybelline test on animals? Turns out the “Great Lash” is not that great. Maybelline DOES test on animals.
  • Neutrogena – We are disappointed that the #1 skin clearing brand takes a yay on the topic. Neutrogena does test on animals.
  • Olay – Sorry if this is one of your faves, but sadly Olay tests on animals.
  • OPI – They were cruelty free, but not anymore…
  • Revlon – Revlon is not cruelty free
  • Rimmel London – Rimmel is a popular brand, but not cruelty free.
  • Sally Hanson – Sadly – their nail polish and treatments are tested on animals.

  • Andalou Naturals – amazing skincare at reasonable prices.
  • Amope – A cruelty free brand for foot care – finally!
  • Ardell – Beautiful cruelty free false lashes in every style from office-friendly to va va voom!
  • Australian Gold – a cruelty free sunscreen brand you can count on to keep your skin healthy!
  • Bonne Belle – Yes! Those LipSmackers are bunny-friendly!
  • Burt’s Bees – You guessed it already! This earth-friendly skincare line totally supports no testing on animals. Power to the bees…. Err the non-stinging ones at least. (Update on cruelty free status.)
  • Certain Dri – If natural deodorants don’t work for you, this is a cruelty free antiperspirant option!
  • Cover Girl – They weren’t cruelty free for the longest time, but now they are Leaping Bunny certified!

  • Derma E – If you can find this one at your local drugstore or Ulta, definitely check out their skincare options. Everything is cruelty free and vegan. I’m obsessed with their Microdermabrasion Scrub.
  • Desert Essence – Bath and body products with natural ingredients like coconut oil, jojoba oil and tea tree oil.
  • Dickinson’s – If you’re a witch hazel girl or guy, you’re in luck – it’s cruelty free!
  • Dr. Teal’s – If you need a long soak in the bath, these bath salts will hit the spot.
  • Duo Lash Glue – A false lash lover’s favorite – all cruelty free.
  • Eco-Tools – All of the brushes and tools are synthetic – no animal fur or animal testing here!
  • ELF – Everyone loves ELF! They have a ton of options and the price is RIGHT.
  • EO Products – You can get hand soap, body wash, skincare, shampoo, and other products with natural essential oils.
  • Essence – Yay! A budget makeup line that has some great selections. I really liked their highlighter!
  • Every Man Jack – This is one of my fiance’s favorites, and a very popular line of skincare and shaving products for men. Find ’em at Target and Wal-Mart.
  • Flower Beauty – Drew Barrymore’s line is available at Wal-Mart store. (Now sold only online.)
  • Giovanni – Cruelty free hair products are hard to find in drugstores, but you should be able to find Giovanni at most drugstores and big chain stores.
  • Jason Naturals – This is another one that’s been around forever – and for good reason. They have great shampoo/conditioner, dental products, lotion and body wash.
  • Jordana – This budget beauty line has some amazing lipsticks and glosses.
  • J.R. Watkins – I’m a huge fan of their body wash, soap, lotion AND cleaning products. They have been around forever, the packaging is gorgeous and the formulas are all-natural.
  • Kiss Lashes – Budget friendly false lashes and lash glue in TONS of styles. I like the faux mink the best!
  • Kiss My Face – An oldie but a goodie! Their body lotions and soaps are some of the best out there.
  • Milani is cruelty free and has shades for every skin tone!
  • nügg – Get your single use cruelty free face masks while you’re picking up your drugstore necessities.
  • NYX – How’s your highlight game? NYX has really upped their game lately – tons of Instagram-friendly makeup. NYX is now owned by L’Oreal (not cruelty free) but they remain cruelty free.
  • Orly – Cruelty free and vegan nail polish! Yasssss!
  • Pacifica – So many vegan options and their packaging is SO pretty!
  • Physicians Formula – they started selling in China, but are avoiding pre-market testing. Here’s why I don’t think post-market testing in China is a concern.
  • Pixi Beauty – One of my faves. You can find these bunny-approved products at Target.
  • Pur Cosmetics (PurMinerals) – They have some amazing mineral makeup options!
  • Sonia Kashuk – You can find this makeup artist inspired brand at Target.
  • Tom’s of Maine – Cruelty free toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, lotion and body wash for the whole family! I’ve been using Tom’s of Maine for about 20 or so years now! The brand is now owned by Clorox (not cruelty free), but they remain cruelty free.
  • Ulta House Brand – If you shop at Ulta, you can pick up their budget-friendly color cosmetics.
  • Wet n Wild – they started selling in China, but are avoiding pre-market testing. Here’s why I don’t think post-market testing in China is a concern.
  • Yes to Carrots – Yes To can fulfill your every skincare need – find it at drugstores everywhere!

  14. I was wondering if you take third party testing into account? I always thought Revlon and Almay participated in third party testing. I would love it if that was wrong. I miss Revlon's eyeliner. 😉

  15. To the best of my knowledge, they do not do any kind of testing. PETA’s Caring Consumer program requires their ingredient suppliers to be cruelty-free as well.

  20. The question is: Which cosmetic companies are cruelty free to humans? Meaning, who refuses to use harsh chemicals in their beauty products that are potentially hazardous to our health?   21. One of the best International natural skincare and color cosmetics brand that is not tested on animals is Oriflame. I agree this is not a drugstore brand as it is only available through Oriflame Beauty Consultants. In case anyone is interested, feel free to contact me.

  24. Thank you for this info. After a decade of using Neutrogena, I will be switching TODAY to Almay or Physician’s Formula. I will also let Neutrogena know why I will no longer buy their products. Keep up the good work! {BTW, someone mentioned recently that Burt’s Bees company has reverted back to animal testing! Something to look into!}

  25. Thanks Deborah! Actually Almay is owned by Revlon who I recently discovered is selling in China. I’m assuming Almay is no longer CF either. 🙁 I hadn’t heard anything negative about Burt’s Bees. If you find anything – will you please send it to me? Figuring out what these companies are up to is a team effort! I appreciate your help!

  28. Unfortunately, Burt’s Bees is owned by Clorox. They say that they remain cruelty-free, which maybe true but know that Clorox (an animal testing corp.) Is indeed gettin g a cut of that money that you spend on Burt’s Bees.

  30. Thank you for promoting a cruelty-free list. I’d just like to mention that Burts Bees products aren’t necessarily cruelty-free. Any product that contains beeswax or honey involves de-habitational effects on honeybees. **Honeybees are essential to life because they provide natural pollination. When you support products that contain honey or beeswax you are harming that natural process.** Please consider this information, thank you.

  31. I wish ELF sold their lipsticks at Target, along with their other products. I’ve only seen glosses, shines, etc there.

    On another topic, I’m sure you are all as anti-fur as me, so I want to spread the word that on QVC, the “faux fur”

    vendor, Dennis Basso, is a Real Fur designer in his other business. I’ve complained to them…. But maybe a few

  32. essence cosmetics is a European drugstore brand and they don’t test on animals either.They don’t send out for testing as well.Disappointed in Revlon,I’ve liked their products in the past but,no more.

  34. Just read Almay/Revlon’s position and I would use their products. Their issue is that they sell to countries that insist on animal testing…period. It’s the law, and those are the third parties who choose to test their products on animals. I have no problem with that. As long as they are selling product TO ME that wasn’t first used on animals, I don’t have a problem with their knowing other countries will test their product on animals. And Burts Bees may have changed now because Clorox bought them, and I am already hearing noise that they have changed some of the formulas and made them irritating. I do not trust Clorox to leave the product alone if they can squeeze a few more pennies out of a company that once earned a great reputation. I don’t go by PETA. I like to read for myself and from more than one source.

  36. Although Burts Bees is cruelty free, they are owned by Proctor and Gamble, who are notorious for animal cruelty and testing. Some Vegans and animal-friendly consumers may choose to continue using burts bees, but for those who choose not to give money to any cruel company, burts bees is a no-go. This is, of course, up to each individual to decide for themselves.

  38. Do Not be complacent keep good morals in society by being part of a solution. Support the hard working small companies that use healthy ingredients and do not sell out for a dollar! My favorite lipstick/gloss is ECCO BELLA Favorite blush powders are by PUR MINERALS. Face powder or foundation by CARGO. Eyeliner by Illamasqua. Heavy day mascara by Hourglass or even Trish McEvoy. All of you gals that are concerned with the recent upswing of animal testing in China, just think that all of the companies that do it now were more than likely doing it all along for your fake tanner, body washes etc. So apply the cruelty free methodology to your whole household. For example try BIOKLEEN laundry detergent or SEVENTH GENERATION. Most of the companies that do not sell out to hurt animals are not going to sell out by using ingredients that would hurt You!

  39. Burt is no longer with us, so I am not feeling the loss of love or loyalty with the whole Proctor and Gamble parent company issue.

  43. The problem with your argument is that these companies know that their products will be tested on animals so they are most definitely responsible for this. These companies are already extremely wealthy and they are choosing more money over morals in sending their products to China. This is the issue most people buying cruelty free have with these companies. They are participants in animal testing by choosing to send the items to china, just like the companies who choose to use ingredients that require mandatory animal testing. Unfortunately PETA are also highly unethical as they are all anti-animal testing pro-vegan yet they have been caught euthanising healthy cats and dogs and lying about things like this. I loathe them

  44. Well if you’re vegan, you’re not going to use Burts Bees anyway because it uses beeswax. Vegans don’t eat honey or use bee products.

  47. Burt’s Bees is owned by Clorox, who tests on animals. They make sure the Burt’s Bees products are cruelty free, but buying those products still supports the company.

  52. Everyone must check out Lush cosmetics! I fell in love with their cruelty free products! Most are marked with a “v” for vegan!

  53. PETA has a long list of company’s they support for cruelty free products. They support them because the company’s purchase ingredients that are also cruelty free. Everywhere along the line has to be cruelty free. Check it out. The list is on their website.

  60. As mentioned, Burt’s bees is owned by clorox. The money purchased to buy Burts bees products easily goes back into the Clorox company.
    It’s all or nothing.

Im glad you guys have a list like this cuz everytime I think a product is cruelty free I learn its not so I hope later don’t find out that they do actually test on animals I got bunnies and guinea pigs and when I look at those awful pics of those poor animals I don’t how they can do something like that I would never even think of doing any of that to my babies

  63. I have extremely dry sensitive skin. I can’t use products with added scents or any of that nonsense. With that being said I’m switching over to cruelty free products and am having a difficult time finding an affordable tinted moisturizer. Does anyone have any suggestions, is too faced a good product to use?

    See that fancy schmancy wording? ONLY CHINA “requires” animal testing. What that statement really says is “we try not to test on animals unless China tells us to.” Most brands, Estee Lauder (& their companies Mac, Bobbi Brown, Origins, Smashbox, etc,), L’oreal (& their companies like Maybelline & Lancome), CoverGirl (& other P&G companies like Pantene, head & Shoulders, OLAY, Tide, Downy,) all use a nearly identical statement designed & written by oober fancy lawyers who realize that most people only pay attention to the first portion of what they read.

    I know L’oreal even goes so far as to state they are 99% cruelty free or something silly that had me fooled for years!

So the L’Oreal product line and any other co L’Oreal owns does not test any of their products nor do they have a 3rd party do it for them, I had just called and this is a new thing they have just finalized in getting all the countries that sell and make their products to stop animal testing, it has been confirmed that yes at one point they did but they are now a clean non animal testing co.

  93. I have found that Peta’s cruelty free list often includes companies that use animal tested ingredients, but that do not test the final product on animals.

  94. Has anyone ever heard of Arbonne ? It is a Swiss company that makes all of their products 100% vegan certified. So there is zero animals testing!!!
    I recently became a consultant just for the fact that they support being cruelty free… And the products are pretty great too 😉 lol.

  97. Yes, Clorox bought Burt’s Bees. The parent company tests on animals, but Burt’s Bees does not. But by buying Burts Bees you are financially helping the parent company, so that’s the conundrum.

  98. L’Oreal sells their cosmetics in China, where it is mandatory to test cosmetics on animals.

  99. I’m from Canada and all the companies listed that do NOT test on animals I have never seen or heard of. I’m not sure what to do!

  101. Yes To has a lot of products including tinted moisturizer. They also have specific formulas based on skin type. Yes To Cucumbers is for sensitive skin, but I believe the Yes To Grapefruit has the tinted moisturizer (CC Cream). http://www.yestocarrots.com/

  103. Alba botanica – available at Walmart is cruelty free. They don’t make makeup up but they have cleansers and moisturizers and I believe a tinted moisturizer aswell.
    Flower- only available at Walmart- has tinted moisturizers and they are pretty good. Completely cruelty free and natural

  104. I’m wondering if anyone knows about cruelty free razors. It may sound odd but I any use the cheepy ones without moisture strips. I’m wondering about the ingredients used in the moisture bars on the good razors. I hope this doesn’t sound dumb.

  106. Did you ever get the confirmation that Revlon/Almay is free of animal testing? I always liked Almay, and used Revlon too, before the China testing requirements came to be.

  109. So if a law was made to test on (torture) anyone who was left handed you’d be fine with it so long as it was ‘the law’? The laws of a country aren’t like the laws of physics you know…they are made by humans, can be changed by humans, if people stop supporting them financially.

  110. I found a cruelty-free brand in my local supermarket. Preserve is the brand. They use recycled yogurt cups for their handles and the refills are reasonably priced.
    I bought a razor from The Body Shop years ago, only for them to discontinue making refills about the same time I bought it. 🙁 I emailed them about it & they told me if I still had the receipt I could return it… I keep a lot of crap & that was one purchase I didn’t think I would need the receipt for… Oh well. Lol!

  114. NYX is also cruelty free and across the board has some really great selection from colors to finishes to selections of products in general. One of my go-to drugstore brands and definitely worth mentioning if you haven’t checked them out!

  115. Most of the products have websites that you can buy from and they’ll ship to you. It may take a little longer than just running out to the drugstore and picking up a product, but at least you’ll know it’s cruelty free 🙂

  117. I agree. I was a huge supporter of Burt’s Bees when they were an independent company (in my hometown, Durham, NC). They were always big on telling everyone that they do not test on animals. Then they sold their company to Clorox and I feel like they are huge hypocrites to sell out for big bucks (when they were doing fine as a smaller, cruelty-free company). I haven’t supported them since. They knew what they were doing, and they knew full well that Clorox was animal testing. Even though they still do not test on animals for the Burt’s Bees line, your money is really going to Clorox. Spend it on a company that isn’t a sell out.

  118. I like Leaping Bunny better too (Peta is hypocritical – they have a kill shelter in Virginia). I won’t buy anything tested on animals in any phase of product creation, so finding out the truth is important.

  126. I went to buy ELF, but see on their packaging that they are manufactured in China. They also claim to be cruelty free on the package, but I don;t see how that’s possible if they are manufactured in China. Can you verify whether they are still cruelty free? Is just the plastic case made in China but the makeup is made in the USA? It only says “Designed in USA” on the package. Scary!

  127. I spoke with ELF, and they were great. Apparently there is a difference between manufacturing in China but NOT selling the products there. In that case, Chinese law does not require animal testing because the products are not sold there. That is the case with ELF – so no, they do not test on animals. If a product is both manufactured AND sold in China, then they must test on animals to sell within China. ELF packaging and web site did not make it clear that they’re not selling in China, but the customer service rep said she’d ask for a website update with that clarification. Yay!

  129. I’m 100% against animal testings! But I’m really worried about some of the products :/. I really avoid those “Made in China” products. Products in China can be dangerous. I buy Physician’s Formula, but I don’t trust ELF.

  130. use geranium oil in jojoba with francensence as well as shea butter. that will help. NO need to get crap, get natural stuff that works.

  131. I cannot believe that Ellen promotes products that are tested on animals. She says she is vegan or vegetarian.

  132. I would recommend trying First Aid Beauty cleanser (white tube with blue writing). Also, paula’s choice which is leaping bunny certified is great. I love their BHA lotions, sunscreens (hydralight and skin recovery are both chemical free) and moisturizers (skin recovery is my favorite). First Aid Beauty is also cruelty free if that helps!

  133. Now they are owned by L’Oreal parent company, so may make some people reconsider since parent company tests.

  134. On the Almay website, it states that they do not conduct animal testing and have not done so for over 20 years. Their parent company (Revlon) started testing again so that products could be sold in China, but I think they have pulled out of China now, so maybe they have quit testing (again). Unless Almay is blatantly lying on their website, they do not test, but it may well be that their parent company does.

  135. I don’t trust Almay or Revlon, so until they release a statement saying they are not testing, not selling in China, and their ingredient suppliers are not testing, I’m not going to buy from them.

  136. L’Oreal’s website says they don’t test on animals, haven’t since 1989 and don’t have others test on their behalf. Therefore, either they are lying or you are incorrect. How does the average consumer determine which?

  137. According to their website the Chinese authorities test the finished products and L’Oreal “can’t prevent that”. Although they could pull out of that market.

  138. L’oreal most likely is complying with the standards of other countries. China requires all imported cosmetics to be tested on animals. So any company that sells in China has to comply. Also, look at the wording. They say that the products are not tested, but do they test the ingredients on animals? Or, do they hire third party labs to test? It’s all in the trickery of PR and Marketing.

  142. Many companies have chosen NOT to sell their products in China, because China makes them unnecessarily test on animals. I’d much rather put my hard earned dollar towards an ethical company that doesn’t sell out by torturing animals.

Buying conscientiously is so hard… even if I choose brands that don’t test on animals, they are usually made with terrible chemicals and manufactured in China where the workers are paid pennies… can I really say a product is cruelty free just because a bunny was saved even if the person who made it was treated like crap??

  145. It’s if they SELL in China cause China requires animal testing. Pretty much all American beauty products are made in China.

  147. I am aware of the selling rules. But I am still correct, as are you. Most Americans products are made there and most American products are still needlessly tested. The brands I use are all made either in the UK, the States or Canada and none of them or their ingredients are tested.

  153. I adore Nuance by Salma Hayek her nail polish base coat s the best and makes my nail polish last a week. Milani awesome I’m a huge fan of their nail polishes9they last me a week) and lipsticks ell like fruit and never dry out my lips.
    I am a huge fan of Wet N Wild, their lipsticks are total dups for Mac lipsticks, very moisturizing. Their mascaras are excellent but dry out to quick for my taste. They have great nail polishes but some of them are not long wearing. Their eyeliners are not the greatest they run and bleed (I’ve only used their pencil ones). I do like that Wet N Wild came out with a makeup remover. This is so excellent since Foever21 stopped selling my favorite makeup remover wipes. I have sensitive skin, Wet N wilds makeup remover wipes does not break me out. They do dry out my skin a little but not enough for me to stop using them.
    Flowers mascara is the best mascara I’ve ever used it lasts me more then six months before it starts to dry out, that is a really long time. And I like the plastic wand better then a brush wand. The plastic wand does not get all gunky and I never need an eyelash comb to separate my lashes. Since I started using Flowers mascara my eyelashes do not break off as much. Also I no longer need to use an eyelash curler any more.

  154. Ok. I know the question of Wet n Wild’s authenticity as cruelty free, but made in China, has been asked and answered numerous times already… I know the difference between MADE in and SOLD in. Here’s what I don’t get though: While I was browsing through their line of products, I noticed a strange discrepancy. Some of their products are made in Mexico. These products carry their little bunny symbol and state clearly that they do not test on animals. The products that are made in China do NOT carry the bunny logo, and they do NOT state anywhere on the packaging that it is not tested on animals. So, I don’t know if that’s maybe why some others have been asking, or if anyone else has even noticed that little factor, but I thought that maybe that fact should be pointed out, because it DOES kind of raise a bit of a red flag if you think about it. Can this be clarified?

  162. You need to update this list. L’Oreal/Maybelline do not test on animals. (and I noticed on one of your other blogs that you mentioned Mary Kay tests on animals, but they don’t.)

    I noticed that this list is older, and am curious to know if you ever heard anything regarding Almay & Revlon?

    I pretty much only buy Drugstore brand Makeup… I’m a Budget Beauty lol. My top 3 favorite brands are all Cruelty Free, and they are
    1) e.l.f Cosmetics (I’ve loved them for over +7 yrs!)
    2) NYX cosmetics (Their “Milk” colored Jumbo Eyeliner Pencil is an absolute must have for all makeup kits!)
    3) Prestige Cosmetics (Their Eyeliners are the best! I’m also in love with their jumbo “Makeup Remover Pen”)

    Peculia- I know you were asking about nail polishes a while ago, but I figured I’d throw it out there that Wet N Wild has a wide variety of nail polishes! Another great brand with cruelty free nail polish is Julep Maven (not a Drugstore Brand, but their quality nail polish & beauty products are definitely worth the price).   171. NYX doesn’t test on animals and sells in Europe too! I love their full coverage concealers and their liquid suede lipsticks, they have some really nice colours along with unique ones like dark grey (totally badass and very pigmented) and neon purple. Also their colourful mascaras are a must for anyone else who has dyed hair (mine is turquoise and the Mint Julep one matches perfectly for my bows)!

  176. I am an animal lover and have had pets since I was a child. I did not give thought to animal testing on my beauty products. I am so ashamed to have been blind for so long. I have used L’Oreal for decades. now my products are in the trash. I will also be send a message to L’Oreal and let them know why I can no longer use their products

  178. Hi Terri – products that are made in China are not required to be tested on animals. Only products imported into China require animal testing.

  182. Thanks for the list. I’ve been using several of the brands like Olay and Sally Hanson to name a few that do animal testing. I had no idea they did this and I’m sad I’ve supported these companies. I won’t be using these brands anymore.

    In India very less natural brands are available, If NYX, Essence and wet n wild are Good then I am definitely gonna start purchasing products from these brands.

  195. I totally agree about Aveeno. To me their products appear very natural and eco-friendly… unfortunately, I don’t think they’re alone in using some clever marketing, packaging, and so on to influence their target audience.
