DIY Spa Treatments in Your Own Bathroom

in Misc on 02/17/12

Ever put mayonnaise in your hair? How about an egg white? Homemade beauty treatments have come a long way since the days of sitting with mayonnaise in your hair. In fact, due to pricey spa treatments, at home beauty treatments have become the healthy, economical choice. Whether it’s sugar scrubs, face masks or hair treatments, we’ll give you all the starter tools you need to jump start your very own at-home spa treatments.

Since you’re doing all the work yourself, shopping for your own beauty ingredients for your own beauty treatments can be fun and less expensive than having a spa do all the work for you. Deciding upon which ingredients you can be generic versus name brand can save you money as well as determining which products are best when purchased organic.

Benefits of DIY Beauty Treatments:

It’s less expensive! Depending on the spa treatment, an average cost of one treatment can range from $20 to $200 or more. Smaller priced treatments such as waxing still require a 20%gratuity to be added to the service cost. While a trip to the spa can be a relaxing treat, getting in the routine of making your own spa treatments at home can save you hundreds of dollars over time.

Ingredient awareness. Unless you go to an organic spa you can’t be sure of the ingredients being put on your body. Just because you are in a spa setting that promotes health, doesn’t mean that the products used in your spa treatments are anywhere near being natural or healthy for your body. When you make your own at home spa treatments, you have total control over the ingredients put put on your body, and with your skin being your body’s largest organ, quality ingredients are vital.

Do It Yourself Spa Treatments are Fun! Whether your home for a relaxing night (and enjoying your own company) or having a spa party with your friends, making and creating your own beauty treatments can be creative and relaxing. If you are hosting your own spa party, grab a bottle of wine, have everyone bring an appetizer and have a few basic ingredients handy. Add a movie and you have the ultimate girls night in!

Try out one of these DIY beauty treatments:

The Classic Olive Oil Hair Treatment
(Source: collegefashion.net)

Olive oil helps nourish hair and makes it soft and can also help ease a dry winter scalp.

Ingredients:
1 bottle of organic extra virgin olive oil

Warm about 1/2 cup of olive oil in a bowl for about 30 seconds in the microwave. Make sure it is not too hot before applying to your hair. Apply warm oil to dry hair. Start with the ends of your hair and apply towards the scalp. Wrap your hair with a warm towel (stick in dryer for a minute) and let your hair soak for 15 minutes. Shampoo hair clean. Oil may take a couple of washes to get out of your hair. Rinse but do not condition.

Organic Blueberry Facial Mask
(Source: TLC.com)

Blueberries contain antioxidants which help neutralize free radicals on your skin. Free radicals are environmental componants that otherwise damage your skin. Blueberries also help normalize oil levels on your skin.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup local organic blueberries
1 tbsp raw organic honey
1 tbsp organic olive oil
Blend ingredients in blender.
Apply evenly on face.
Leave mask on for 5-7 minutes.
Remove with a damp cloth.

Lemon and Brown Sugar Body Scrub
(Source: collegefashion.net)

Sugar Scrubs are one of my all time favorite beauty products! They keep your skin smooth and soft and, over time, can help prevent your pores from being clogged.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup course brown sugar
1 tbsp of honey
a drop of extra virgin olive oil
1/4 tbsp fresh lemon juice

Smooth over body and then rinse off.

Choose Your Own Essential Oil Bath Salts
(Source: shine.yahoo.com.)

Bath Salts are another personal beauty product that I can’t live without. Not only do they contain magnesium and sulfates (which the body needs) that are absorbed into the body, they also relax muscles and promote a sense of peace and well-being.

Ingredients:
¾ cup Epsom salts
¼ cup baking soda
4 drops of essential oil* of your choice (lavender and eucaplyptus are relaxing choices)

*Just make sure you use therapeutic grade essential oils in your bath mixture. Young Living is a great brand!

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Add drops of essential oil. Add salts to warm bath water. Relax.

These simple and inexpensive DIY beauty treatments are a great starting point to experimenting and creating your own. There is also a ton of at-home spa treatments on the internet that you can modify to make sure the ingredients are healthy for your skin. Do you have a favorite DIY beauty treatment you’d like to share?

Always ask the tour guide questions about treatments, package deals, signature treatments and qualifications of the treatment staff, particularly massage therapists and aestheticians.
