dermalogica redness relief primer review

Dermalogica Redness Relief Primer Review

I’ve been happily in state of denial about my rosacea for a few years now. Bit too long in the sun, I’m just a little flushed, my skin must not like that new cleanser…these are all things I told myself in the past and they’re just not cutting it these days. I can’t deny it any longer. I have rosacea. There, I said it. Now, how to deal with it?

Luckily the answer came rather quickly, directly from the skin experts at Dermalogica and their Ultra Calming product collection. A whole collection specifically for those whose skin seems to be constantly mad at them? What a relief! ACTUAL relief in the form of their Redness Relief Primer ($45 for 0.75 oz).

This slim tube with the needle nose tip contains a translucent primer that’s tinted with natural green botanical extracts that treats the skin, counteracts redness, balances skin tone and preps the skin for makeup (if you wear it.)

As if that powerhouse of benefits isn’t enough, it also has an SPF 20. Because if there’s one thing that angers rosacea, it’s the sun. (It’s not so fond of alcohol or spicy food either, but that’s another post.)

This primer feels amazingly soothing on the skin, thanks in part to Oat Extracts and Oat Kernel Oil, and something Dermalogica calls their “UltraCalming™ Complex.” There are no artificial fragrances, colors or parabens, and of course, it’s cruelty free.

Something I was slightly concerned about was finding silicones in the ingredient list. I’m oily and usually avoid them profusely. But I have to say, my skin didn’t mind them; I experienced no breakouts and my makeup stayed in place rather than slipping off my face like it usually does if I use products with ‘cones. But, it’s something to keep in mind if you’re not a fan of them.

My favorite aspect of the Redness Relief Primer is the green tint. My years in art school all came flooding back; green is the shade opposite red on the color wheel, so therefore, it counteracts it. And it really does. The light green tint is very sheer, I saw no trace of it once I rubbed the primer on. But it’s there, just enough to subtly veil your redness. It won’t disappear entirely, but it sure looks less angry.

And how genius is the plastic slide that’s included with the product? Just squeeze it on to the bottom of the tube and it squeezes every last drop of product out for you.

So, whether you’re in denial, acceptance or somewhere in between with your redness or rosacea, let Dermalogica give you some relief.
