Give Your Hair the Moisture It Needs: 3 DIY Treatments

cruelty free hair remedies

As an American growing up with parents from the Indian subcontinent, I was always skeptical of home remedies. There were some pretty crazy things my mom did to keep her skin flawless and her hair from turning gray. There is one cruelty free hair treatment I tried a few years ago, and it changed my hair texture almost instantly. I started putting all natural oil in my hair and leaving it in overnight (once every two weeks). I had tried deep conditioning treatments before, but the chemicals, unfriendly animal testing on conditioning products, and exorbitant prices made me feel guilty every time I tried it. Also, there were many unintended consequences; sometimes my hair would fall out after the treatment.

Once my mom convinced me to try a natural, cruelty free oil treatment, I was converted to a believer — in home remedies that is. The oil treatments I did at home, at my own convenience, were cheaper and much more effective. I would warm up different types of oils (one for each use) and use cotton swabs to spread them on my scalp. I would try to get every inch of my scalp, and then I would use a brush and my hands to massage the oil through my hair. Don’t be afraid of a mess! You can put on a shower cap and sleep for the night. Take a rest while the oil works its magic! Here is a description of the three best oils to use in your hair. I recommend using each of them separately. Start off with one and try another two or three weeks later.

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil can be helpful for repairing a dry scalp and giving your hair a clean, refreshed look. Heat it up, and use cotton swabs to massage the oil into every inch of your scalp. Use a tooth comb to comb the oil into your hair. Be sure to cover the surface area or chair where you are applying the oil. If you would like to find some raw, organic coconut oil, check out your local Whole Foods, GNC, or health food store. You can also order some from GlobalGoods.com.

Olive Oil

This oil is great to use on men or women lacking sufficient protein in their diets. Because lack of protein can make your hair brittle and dry, olive oil can help restore moisture to your roots and split ends. You don’t necessarily have to warm up this oil before you use it, but it can help make the oil easy to handle and apply to your scalp.

Organic Argan Moroccan Oil

A variant of this oil was used in ancient Ottoman times in hamams (Turkish baths) and Arab baths throughout Asia. Use very little of the oil, which is composed of herbs and spices, each time. It can help you get that sexy shine you have been searching for! I recommend leaving this one in overnight as well! The best part of using this oil: it smells phenomenal!
