What are Artis Brushes?

I’m sure you’ve seen these gorgeous, uniquely-shaped Artis makeup brushes all over your Instagram feed and on YouTube lately. The brushes are sometimes large and hair-brushed shaped, but with an angular bent, and sometimes smaller (I’ve seen people call them “toothbrushes”). Basically they are nothing like hair brushes or toothbrushes, but they are also vastly different from the makeup brushes you’re used to.

Artis brushes are cruelty free, vegan and the brand itself is against animal testing. They don’t just look cool – they actually perform. Here’s why:

“A good tool should make doing something easier, not harder,” says Artis founder Matthew Waitesmith. Artis is the Latin word for skill, method, technique, conduct or character. The brushes are very soft, and made from vegan fibers (CosmeFibre® filaments). But, they are not “floppy soft” like some brushes that shall remain nameless. They are SO densely packed, that you get a very smooth, even application. The brushes are slightly flexible and bent to complement your facial curves. They might look heavy, but they are very light!

Why does the product go on so smoothly? This is what Artis had to say, “Makeup applies more uniformly due to the CosmeFibre®. The uniform structure of this engineered fibre plus the tapered ends helps apply product more consistently than animal hair. Artis brushes on average have 3-10 times as many individual fibres as conventional brushes. More fibres do more work with every pass across the surface of the skin. For example, the Oval 10 Brush has over 250,000 individual fibres each with a microscopically small and soft tip.”

My fiance wanted to know why I had “men’s shaving brushes” on my beauty counter. I explained what they were, and as he watched me apply foundation with the larger Oval 8 brush, he just said “Wow!” You can apply liquid foundation (or powders) directly to the brush, but I like to dot the foundation on my cheeks, nose, forehead and chin, and then blend in a circular motion. This brush is starting to take the place of my beloved Beauty Blender! I’m sure I’ll continue to use both, but this brush is pretty fantastic for foundation.

The Elite Gold Oval 7 is a beauty! It’s gold plated and slightly smaller than the Oval 8. It’s perfect for contouring or applying blush or highlighter. It fits into the contours of your face perfectly (you may not think that by looking at it – but it does!). You can use it to apply the product directly to your face, and then blend. It goes on so easily!

The brushes come in gorgeous packaging – even if you only purchase one brush (and not the whole set), it still looks like a gift fit for a queen – check out the packaging for the Elite Gold series Oval 7 brush. This would make a great gift for the beauty lover or makeup artist who has everything.

I use the smaller Fluenta brush (the smallest Circle 1 brush) for concealer application – under my eyes, down my nose, on spots, etc. I also tried using it for highlighting small areas (under the brow area for example) and for applying eyeshadow. I think the eyeshadow application will take more practice. You can also use it to apply lipstick. It comes packaged in a lovely velvet gift box with satin lining.

These brushes are meant to last. They resist excess water, alcohol, acids and detergent. They won’t degrade from brush cleaning formulas. They resist UV rays better than animal hair brushes. And because they are not made from animal hair, they won’t shed (at least mine haven’t yet!), and they retain their shape better. If the fibers get compressed or bent, simply run them in hot water or steam for a few seconds and allow to dry. Good as new!

I have only tried three brushes, and although I’m a big fan, I’m not an expert. Have questions about how to use the different styles of brushes, how to clean them, etc? I recommend checking out the Artis website. There are video tutorials and Q&As to cover everything you need to know.

You can purchase Artis brushes online or at Net-A-Porter, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Space NK, Saks, Anthropologie and many other high-end retailers.

I purchased the Artis makeup brush at Dillard’s in Asheville NC, I used this brush for a little over a month and the brush feel off of the handle! This brush cost me $60.99. Very poor quality, very disappointed in this product.
