Mexico Beyond the Headlines
Mexico often gets a bad reputation in the media, focusing only on crime and cartels. But there’s so much more to this beautiful country than what the news shows. In 2016, my husband and I started traveling full-time, and Mexico was our first stop—and it completely changed my perspective.
Discovering San Miguel de Allende
Out of all the incredible places we visited, one town stood out: San Miguel de Allende. Located in Guanajuato, it’s a charming blend of history, culture, and relaxation. Here’s why I fell in love with it:
- Welcoming expat community – Around 10,000-12,000 expats from the U.S., Canada, and Europe call it home.
- Amazing food – A mix of local and international cuisine.
- Stunning scenery – Hot springs, colorful streets, and Spanish colonial architecture.
- Perfect weather – Sunny and comfortable most of the year.
- Peaceful vibe – Great for morning walks, café visits, and quiet exploration.
When to Visit
The best time to go is November to April, when temperatures are mild (70s-80s°F / 21-26°C) and rain is rare. We visited in February and June—both were great, but summer can get rainy.
Must-Do Experiences
- La Gruta Hot Springs – A relaxing escape for just $11-$12 per person.
- Exploring hidden streets – Wander the cobblestone alleys and discover quiet corners.
- Enjoying rooftop dining – The city has incredible restaurants with beautiful views.
My Favorite Food Spots
- Lavanda Café – A cozy spot with lavender lattes and amazing French toast.
- Berlin Bar & Bistro – A surprising find with great German and local dishes.
- Cafe Oso Azul – Perfect for breakfast in a pretty courtyard.
- La Burger – Unexpectedly delicious burgers with goat cheese and caramelized onions.
- Cafe Rama – A peaceful brunch spot with fantastic croque madame.
Final Thoughts
If you’re visiting Mexico, don’t skip San Miguel de Allende. It’s a magical place with so much to offer—far beyond the resorts and big cities. I can’t wait to go back!
